5th International Affairs Conference,
Sept. 16-17, Washington, DC

CSPA’s Fifth International Affairs Conference, focusing on Current Global Movements and Their Impact on Consumer Products, will be held Sept. 16 to 17 at the Hilton Washington Embassy Row in Washington, D.C.  The event is sponsored by the International Affairs Committee.

Presentations on the first day, Tuesday, Sept. 16, will be covered in two sessions.  The day’s agenda also includes luncheon at the Embassy of Slovenia from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., during which a high-ranking embassy official will address the attendees on international activities that have unfolded during Slovenia’s European Union Presidency.  A reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. will wrap up the day.  The conference continues with the third session on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and concludes at noon. 

Specific presentations are highlighted below:

Session I on “Market Forces and External Influences” will take up the green movement; retailers’ perspective on the difficulties of importing products from around the world; label and marketing claims; the Air Freshener Product Stewardship Program and emerging European Union (EU) issues.

Session II will focus on biocides and pesticides.  Topics include the Biocides Product Directive, which is undergoing review and revision.  Pesticide registration in Asia/Pacific and in Mexico will be covered in separate discussions.

Session III will open with a presentation by Kelly Semrau, CSPA Chairman, on creating and delivering consistent communications to a global audience. Following this presentation, speakers will address issues relating to the lack of international harmonization and the hurdles in global harmonization of labeling.  Other topics include Canada’s modifications and technical amendments to the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations; business perspective of chemical management in the EU; and updates on the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) and its effect on consumer products imported into the EU.
