New Horizons, Oct. 19-22, Englewood, CO
An authoritative educational forum for senior practitioners, New Horizons brings together respected professionals in cleaning technologies. The 2008 program, which runs through three and a half days, offers a wealth of information in five sessions. An updated agenda may be viewed at here. In order to provide a sense of the substantial educational offerings in the New Horizons program, Executive Newswatch will feature a two-part preview of the conference proceedings. The series begins with an introduction of the event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Stanley Slater, PhD, followed by an overview of the five sessions and a list of scheduled presentations in each session. The next part of the series will feature abstracts of selected presentations. Distinguished Marketing Scholar to Keynote New Horizons Stanley Slater, PhD, Charles and Gwen Lilllis professor of business administration at Colorado State University, will keynote CSPA’s New Horizons conference on Sunday, Oct. 19 at the dinner hour following the opening reception. In keeping with the conference theme, “Technologies and Challenges for Today and Tomorrow,” Dr. Slater will discuss “Creating Knowledge Capital: The Foundation for Customer Adoption of New Technologies.” Dr. Slater previously directed the business administration program at the University of Washington’s Bothell Campus, where he developed an MBA program especially designed for professionals in technology-oriented businesses. He also served on the faculty of the University of Colorado. Prior to entering academe, Dr. Slater held professional and managerial positions with IBM and Adolph Coors Company, and has consulted or provided training to units of Hewlett-Packard, Johns-Manville, United Technologies, Eastman Chemical and Weyerhaeuser, among others. He has published more than 50 articles on strategy formulation and implementation, strategies for innovation management and the role of a market orientation in organizational success. A recent study published in the Journal of Marketing found that Dr. Slater was one of the 10 most influential marketing scholars in the world today. Session I - This session will be chaired by Hedieh Modaressi, Rhodia, Inc. Overview: Today’s competitive household and I&I products environment is changing to meet the ever-growing demands of high performance on many different surfaces and substrates. Presentations: Differentiating Benefits in Surface Modification by Means of New Polymers Novel Wiping Substrates for Consumer Products
This session will be chaired by Diane Boesenberg, Reckitt Benckiser. Overview: Developing formulations for the global consumer is not an easy task. Whether a product is to be sold in the U.S., Canada or abroad, it is necessary to consider the specific regulatory guidelines that the product will have to meet before it goes to market. To be successful, a product must be able to comply with regulations in the various regions where it is to be marketed, such as: requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, changes in Canadian regulations, and, in the not too distant future, new requirements under the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS); the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH), and the European Biocidal Products Directive process. Demands of the environmental movement also could further complicate the Global Regulatory Framework. This session will provide guidance through the regulatory process towards every marketer’s ultimate goal – a successful product launch. Presentations: Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) Canada Registration Process/Detergents Directive Green Regulations Biocidal Products Directive
This session will be co-chaired by Edgar Acosta and Steve Bolkan from the Surfactant and Detergent Division of AOCS. Overview: Sustainability and performance are issues that preoccupy industry and academia. Academic and industrial speakers will discuss the latest advances in biologically derived – renewable – surfactants, and in new methods for hard surface cleaning, surface modification and solution behavior. The discussions on renewable surfactants will cover new surfactant chemistries and their formulation, novel methods of synthesis and separation using common and unconventional raw materials (including waste). The challenges and opportunities for the development of “green” products formulated with renewable materials will be discussed. The talks on surface cleaning and modification will cover advances in nanotechnology for surface cleaning, self-cleaning, surface modification, and in computational methods to formulate and optimize the removal of hydrophobic stains. Part 1: Advances in Surface Chemistry Presentations: Recent Advances and Trends in Surface Cleaning: “Mean to Green?” – Formulation trends over the last three to four years within surface cleaning, laundry and industrial cleaners Life after HLB: The Characteristic Curvature and Opportunities for Computer-Based Formulation Screening Part 2: Surfactants from Renewable Resources Presentations: New Surfactant Chemistries Based on Renewable Feedstocks Surfactant Extraction from Waste Biomass
This session will be chaired by Mark Ventura, Church & Dwight Co., Inc. Overview: There is perhaps nothing more important to future business success than understanding what customers will be asking for tomorrow. Already, dramatic changes are increasingly seen in the marketplace as consumers are demanding more sustainable products such as green cleaners as well as safer and “healthier” products. This session will reveal emerging marketing trends, gaps in consumer needs and new business opportunities that will shape tomorrow’s consumer product market. Three speakers will address emerging marketing trends in the general consumer market, the household cleaners’ market and the institutional and janitorial products’ market. This session will help to provide a much better insight as to what companies can expect their customers to demand from businesses and products in the near future. Presentations: Marketing Trends in Consumer Household Market Marketing Trends in I&I Products
This session will be chaired by Jose Ramirez, JohnsonDiversey, Inc. Overview: Public awareness around the emergence of infectious diseases has never been higher. The recent occurrence of infectious events with profound human and economic consequences has further contributed to heightened public concern. Catastrophic outbreaks like SARS and Avian Flu were reminders of the threat to humans of zoonotic diseases. Other chronic problems like Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria have now transcended the professional health care environment to threaten daily life in our communities. This session highlights the role of the cleaning and sanitation industry in mitigating these risks by focusing on pathogens of current and future concern. Emphasis will be on understanding the causative agents and their epidemiology, as well as protocol/technology combinations that can be used to monitor and prevent the occurrence of infective events. Participants will obtain valuable knowledge and understanding of fundamental problems for the industry to solve in public health. This should prove useful in guiding future technology and product development efforts. Presentations: Current Trends in Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection in Health Care Facilities Infection Prevention in the Household Setting: Current Issues and Practice Current and Emerging Practice in Sterilization and Decontamination in High Risk Health Care Settings Registration fees for New Horizons are $695.00 for CSPA and AOCS members by Sept.19 and $745.00 thereafter.
